Page 1 of 2 EMR for Africa
The EMR project for Africa was initiated by Prof. Jan De Maeseneer when he requested the Wonca Medical Informatics Group (WMIG) for a elctronic medical record that could be distributed free to the African countries.
After a meeting with people from more than 15 African countries in Kampala on 15.09.07, Jan requested the following functionality:
- the programme should be usable in an environment with a level of pentium II;
- an episode oriented structure is absolutely necessary;
- ICPC 2 with conversion to ICD10 should be incorporated, if possible with the thesaurus in English and French; and
- a field for medication (episode-oriented) is needed.
The aim of this tool (EMR) was:
- to serve for registration of encounters in daily practice in heatlh centres and family medicine practices;
- to contribute to the correction of epidemiological data; and
- to give us starting point to research; to document the discipline of family medicine in the African context.
5000 Euro was available as part of a budget for a project with Moi University in Eldoret Kenya, where a trial could also be organised.
