Searching the literature for community medicine physicians: a hands-on workshop
Prerequisites –
Experience in doing PubMed searches Familiarity and use of general search engines such as Google, Google Scholar
It would be useful if you have a current research question of interest that you are working or plan to work
At the end of this session you must be able to
1. Describe what is a database and how journal articles are indexed in a database 2. Explain what you understand by a ‘primary bibliometric database’ taking PubMed as an example 3. Define MeSH and explain its importance in searching PubMed 4. List three different ways of searching PubMed using specificity and sensitivity of search results 5. Explain PubMed filters/special queries and their relevance to Public Health 6. Describe how to use ‘MyNCBI’ to store your searches 7. Describe how you to set-up an Email alert for a topic of your interest in PubMed 8. List five bibliometric databases and explain briefly their usefulness 9. Describe what consists of the Cochrane Library 10. Explain the difference between a ‘traditional review article’ and a ‘systematic review' 11. Demonstrate using Google, Google Scholar and Scirus to search for journal articles and web sites
