Introduction to electronic medical records Medical records are essential for general practitioners (GP) to provide quality continuity of care. With the explosion of medical knowledge and the increasing complexity and demands of patient care, it is agreed that the computer-based patient record (CPR) is an “essential tool and inevitable technology for the practice of modern medicine”[1]. Even though the paper-based medical record has been described as “woefully inadequate to meet the needs of modern medicine”[2], the introduction of the CPR, with its benefits and potential advantages has been slow, and does not give an optimistic view even in developed countries[3].
